UK ETA for Citizens of the United States – What You Need to Know
The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is a new entry requirement introduced by the UK government. It’s similar to the U.S. ESTA or Canada’s eTA. It allows visa-exempt nationals, including Americans, to enter the UK for short stays such as tourism, business, transit, or visiting friends and family.
Do U.S. Citizens Need a UK ETA?
Yes. As of January 8, 2025, all U.S. citizens are required to obtain a UK ETA before traveling to the United Kingdom. This applies to visitors entering the UK for short-term stays of up to six months.
You’ll need to apply for and receive your ETA before boarding your flight to any UK destination.
What Does the UK ETA Allow?
With a valid UK ETA, U.S. citizens can:
Visit the UK for up to 6 months for tourism, family visits, or business
Enter for short-term study (up to 6 months)
Transit through the UK en route to another country
Important: The ETA does not allow you to work or live in the UK long-term. If your visit involves employment, extended study, or residency, a proper visa is required.
What you need in order to apply for a UK ETA?
A valid U.S. passport
A recent digital passport-style photo
Basic personal details
A debit or credit card for payment
Once approved, your ETA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.
What Happens If You Travel Without an ETA?
If you attempt to travel to the UK without an approved ETA, you won’t be allowed to board your flight. Airlines and carriers are required to check for valid ETAs before departure.
The UK ETA requirement for U.S. citizens is now active. Don’t wait until the last minute — apply early, and travel with peace of mind.
